Even in normal times, parents wrestle with decisions about how best to support their children’s development. Now, however, parents are faced with nearly-unprecedented choices, and problems with no clear solutions: What if in-person schooling is better for emotional health, but remote schooling is better for physical health? How can children foster social skills without typical social interactions? How can parents select among learning environments when all the options have clear downsides?

When you have a child or family member on the autism spectrum, creating a safe and functional home environment is an important task. Autism can have a huge impact on an individual’s development, lifestyle, and social connections. People on the spectrum can be particularly sensitive to lights, sounds, and other stimuli. Many crave order and routines to make sense of the world. Safety can be a concern for those who wander, are drawn to water, or are prone to head banging or self injury.

When a child endures a traumatic experience, the whole family feels the impact. But adults hold the power to help lessen its effects. Several factors can change the course of kids’ lives: feeling seen and heard by a caring adult, being patiently taught coping strategies and resilience-building techniques, and being with adults who know about the effects of such experiences. Here are ways to bring these factors to life.

CARERS WEEK 2021

I know it seems a bit early but let's start thinking about Carers Week 2021 which is from the 7th to 13th June! This past year has been a different, special, difficult, challenging one and as carers we have been through experiences we had never imagined. As carers we have helped someone to live their life as fully and safely as they can and, in the process, have become less and less visible and supported by society and services. We understand that during lockdown and restrictions the way we had previously been supported was, by necessity, reduced or withdrawn but we are ready for that to change for the better. When things begin to resume, we do not want to remain invisible, we want to be recognised and supported and the work we have done to keep people safe and well acknowledged.

Pandemic Winter Survival Guide for Families
As we head into fall and winter, pandemic restrictions will become harder for many. With less daylight and fewer outdoor opportunities, families will need to come up with good coping mechanisms to help reduce conflict and foster positivity. Keeping your home clean and decluttered will help lower stress levels as we head indoors for the colder weather.

Organisations are being invited to attend an online seminar which looks at reducing isolation for older people
Scottish service-providers, local authorities, health bodies, third sector organisations and anyone interested in addressing the issue of loneliness in later life are invited to take part in a seminar held by the Campaign to End Loneliness, next month (Monday November 16).
The free online event will explain the framework on how to tackle loneliness outlined in the Campaign to End Loneliness’s new report Promising Approaches Revisited: Effective action on loneliness in later life, which aims to help those commissioning and funding services to better understand what they can do in their area and includes several Scottish initiatives as examples of good practice.

Millions of people across the UK have received vital support from their local library during lockdown
Libraries have stepped in to offer a lockdown lifeline, helping 9 million UK adults to feel less alone according to a study by The Carnegie UK Trust.
The trust has published a new report assessing the impact of public library services since the introduction of lockdown restrictions. The findings show that some 15 million adults in the UK used public library services in the period between March and June 2020, almost two thirds of whom (60%) say their libraries and library staff helped them to feel less alone.
The Carnegie UK Trust found that library staff have proactively contacted as many as 3.7 million adults since lockdown began. A parallel study from Libraries Connected published this week found that over 130,000 phone calls were made by 130 library services. In keeping with their role at the heart of the community, 64% of those who had used the service during lockdown said that the library service had improved their wellbeing and 63% felt more connected to their community.

My experience with Fife Dog Rescue and Rehoming, Lochgelly
We have had 3 large-ish dogs since we started adopting dogs (we have only had the 3 dogs over the years). All have been on the large-ish side, collies crossed with larger dogs. Shirley and I are both disabled, Shirley within the last 5 years with bone cancer, me a lot longer with MS along with a few other conditions that can go with MS.
I have been using large-ish mobility scooters for over 20 something years. Most of that we had the 3 dogs. Shep, Max and the most recent Jasper.
All have been able to walk beside when I went for walks on my mobility scooter.

Where care homes are not accepting visitors, it is important that systems are put in place to enable people to keep in touch. This is a time of concern and worry for people about their loved ones and it is important that they can keep in touch. It is also important for the health and wellbeing of people who live in services to not feel abandoned by family and friends.
