Fife Voluntary Action and Fife Council have launched a service to help co-ordinate individuals and organisations offering aid and support to vulnerable people in our communities amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Through our Helping Hand register, we are signposting people to appropriate community groups and those engaging in informal volunteering. You can also tell us about somebody you know who needs assistance – we can link them up with volunteers too!

How do I apply?

Fill in the registration form on our website and one of our co-ordinators will be in touch. Alternatively, e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call us on 0800 389 6046.

We have already had fantastic feedback on this service and have received over hundreds of offers to lend a Helping Hand.

Thank you!

1. Does your organisation have a business continuity plan or a Covid-19 policy?

This is the starting point for practical advice that will apply to volunteering. Read it and digest it. If volunteering is not included, advocate to leadership that information on volunteers be added asap.

    In 2018, our Is Scotland Fairer? report on the state of equality and human rights in Scotland found that disabled and older people continue to face problems accessing all forms of public transport.

    One of our current Priority Aims is that “public transport supports the economic and social inclusion of disabled people and older people”. To help bring this about we recently launched a project to support legal claims by individuals who experience these problems.

    A guide to making general practice dementia friendly

    People with dementia can experience difficulties in attending general practice, which can create barriers when even the best care and support is in place. They may experience difficulties with:

    • not remembering to attend appointments;
    • navigating the physical environment of the practice;
    • not being able to express their concerns in the short time available with the GP, and
    • not recalling details of discussions regarding their care.

    Experiencing difficulties when accessing GPs can impact on the quality of life and the health of people with dementia and their carers. It can also impact on the usage of primary care, emergency admissions to hospitals and transitions to residential care.

    This guide, produced by Alzheimer Scotland and Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s Improvement Hub, is a self-assessment tool to enable GP practices to become dementia friendly. It was adapted for Scotland from the Alzheimer Society’s guide of the same name with their kind permission and includes a checklist for GP practices to help people with dementia and their carers access high quality care and support.
