Dear People's Panel Member

Fife Health and Social Care Partnership has asked us to contact you to tell you about how you can help shape the training of the next generation of medical students working in Fife's hospitals and local communities.

You may be aware that earlier this year NHS Fife and the University of St Andrews announced the development of a new medical degree programme which will allow students to complete their clinical training and primary medical qualification here in Fife.  This followed the Scottish Parliament removing a historic prohibition that had prevented the University of St Andrews from awarding its own medical qualifications.  The new Scottish Community Orientated Medicine programme, or ScotCOM as it is better known, is intended to provide a unique approach to medical education and prepare doctors-in-training for the challenges associated with providing modern healthcare.

The five-year programme will see medical students train to provide specialist care in a range of settings, with a focus on community-based clinical teaching to help provide students with a comprehensive understanding of primary care services, whilst ensuring exposure and understanding of hospital-based care.  Ahead of the start of the ScotCOM course near year, people in Fife are being asked to help shape the new course.  A survey has been developed aim to capture the priorities of local people when they receive care and treatment, and the attributes they value most in the medical staff they see.

To have your voice heard you can complete the survey online via this website Scottish Community Orientated Medicine (ScotCOM) Programme | NHS Fife - this website gives you information about the ScotCOM programme and you can click on the button on the website which takes you to the "ScotCOM Programme - Public Survey".

If you require a paper copy of the survey, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 03451 555555 (extension 475030) and provide them with your name and postal address and request that a paper copy of the "ScotCOM Programme Public Survey" be posted to you.

The feedback received from this survey will be used to shape the programme course materials, ensuring the next generation of doctors have the opportunity to learn from the same communities that they will train and likely work in.

The closing date for responses is 22nd November 2024.

Kind regards

Pauleen
