Care experienced children and young adults told the Care Review how frightening, painful and embarrassing the use of restraint was for them. As such, children and young people's services are required to notify the Care Inspectorate of all instances of physical intervention which are classed as restraint. This also includes instances of mechanical, chemical or environmental restraint, including seclusion.

From week beginning 19 August 2024 the restrictive practice notification is to change. The revised notification will increase assurance in this key practice area and make it easier to identify possible themes and patterns of restraint within services. The notification will now request, for example, the initials and age of the young person subject to the restraint, the ‘trigger’ for the restrictive practice and the name of house/unit where the restrictive practice took place.

Please contact your case-holding inspector should you require further assistance when the new notification goes live.
