Help us plan the future of healthcare services for Fife
Why does healthcare need to change?
Fife's population is expected to increase by 32,000 in the next 20 years. We are living longer thanks to advances in medicine and healthcare, but chronic conditions such as diabetes, dementia and heart disease are on the rise. People often experience multiple complex health problems in later life.
Improvements in cancer treatments mean survival rates are better and more people are now living with cancer.
Innovation in medicine means many more conditions can be successfully treated without the need for a hospital stay.
New technology can bring real benefits to patients and we need to ensure we make the best use of it to improve patient care.
What is the Clinical Strategy?
The Clinical Strategy is NHS Fife's plan for healthcare services for the future, responding to the changing needs of the population. It is the result of several months' work led by senior clinicians, each focusing on a different area of healthcare. They heard from staff, patients and their carers, community groups and representatives from charities and voluntary groups before making a series of recommendations.
These proposals, which form the basis of the Clinical Strategy, are designed to ensure NHS Fife can continue to provide the highest quality of care in a changing world for all the people of Fife. They touch upon the care provided to everyone in Fife in some way or another from new families at maternity, right through to palliative care and care in the last days of life.
Some key principles lie at the heart of the Clinical Strategy.
The recommendations will...
⦁ Treat patients as individuals and recognise that 'one size' does not fit all
⦁ Ensure services are safe, sustainable, efficient and adaptable over time
⦁ Ensure care is provided closer to home wherever possible
⦁ Ensure services are joined up between primary and secondary care, e.g. between GPs, community services and hospitals
⦁ Provide best value by making the best use of available funding
What does this mean for me?
You will be a partner in all decisions about your care and we will develop plans with you and your family to help you remain well.
We will listen to what matters to you when designing your care and respect your wishes.
The type of treatment you receive will be based on what you need.
We will design our health and care services to be delivered as close to where you live as possible.
When specialist care is needed there will be timely access to it.
We will provide information and services to help you improve your health and wellbeing and prevent health problems.
