Public Health Scotland and ARHAI would like to remind staff and providers about the importance of continuing to adopt and implement best practice in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). The National Infection Prevention and Control Manual, the Care Home IPC Manual and Public Health Scotland guidance can be found here:
National Infection Prevention and Control Manual: Home (scot.nhs.uk)
PHS- COVID-19 health protection guidance
Adhering to evidence-based IPC guidance is a significant way that staff can help reduce the risk of infections and ensure the safety of people who experience care, staff and visitors.
Standard Infection Control Precautions (SICP) can reduce the risk of transmission of infectious agents from known and unknown sources. This is the reason that SICP should be used by all staff, at all times, whether infection is known to be present or not. SICP ensure the safety of people who experience care, staff and visitors.
Transmission based precautions are an additional precaution that should be used if a person who experiences care has a suspected or known infection.
Before admission, an IPC risk assessment is an important way that staff can ensure the safety of others. If you suspect or are aware that a person who experiences care has an infection, details should be confirmed so that the correct IPC precautions are put in place.
