Young Carer`s
Authorisation Card

Improving information and support for young carers in Fife

Why have a young Carer`s Card?

Young Carers look after parents or siblings who are ill or have a disability which affects the whole family.

It is estimated that there are 5,000 young carers in fife. Often they are alone in supporting a parent with an illness or disability, including substance misuse, and are not identified or recognised as the person who gives care.

Often young carers have useful, relevant information to share with you about the person they care for, which may prove valuable and save you a lot of time when working with families.

What to do when you are presented with the card

The reverse of the card will list which information the Cared for Person has consented to be shared with young carer.

The level of information given should be age appropriate and at the professional`s discretion.

What Young Carers say

"I`m 17, yet when my mum was in hospital no one would discuss my mum`s situation with me. I`m her main carer and have been since I can remember. It`s humiliating and frustrating not being involved in decisions about my mum yet I am considered old enough to care for her.¬
