I have been registered with the PDSA for a number of years now due to being in receipt of employment and support allowance (ESA).

I recently received the below letter from them.

Over the last 12 months we have been reviewing all PDSA Veterinary services, including our Pet Practice Service. The purpose of this review was to ensure that we are making the biggest difference possible to pet welfare in the UK, with the limited resources available to the charity.

Following this comprehensive review, which involved many private vet practices, it has become clear that, sadly, the existing PDSA Pet Practice Service is unaffordable for PDSA in the long-term. Therefore, we have taken the difficult decision to close this service in its current form.

This decision will not affect your current registration and you will still be able to access free treatment for your pet until the expiry date on your registration certificate. After this date, the Pet Practice Service will no longer be available.

We remain committed, however, to maintaining some charitable support to pet owners in need, wherever local circumstances and funding allow. So we are looking to introduce an alternative scheme in 2018 for existing Pet Practice Service clients - known as PDSA Pet Care.

For a monthly payment of £4.50 you would have access to a range of benefits to help you keep your pet healthy and happy. Please see the attached leaflet for more information.

We are currently working with veterinary practices to provide this service in communities across the UK. We will continue these discussions with vet practices in your area and we will write to you again, approximately three months before your registration is due to expire, to explain the options available to you.
